The reason why I applied for the Genomics Summer Internship Program is related to the fact that while I have learned much knowledge in university, there were limited opportunities available for gaining extensive lab experience due to academic and extracurricular activities. The experience offered by this program seemed quite worthwhile and intensive in gaining expertise in many aspects in a relatively short span of time.
The two months were a great learning experience for me through conducting experiments. Of much more importance is that the program assisted me in learning to think independently. This included learning how to look for solutions when encountering problems rather than relying on others. The program also provided a chance for me to engage in the entire process that a researcher undergoes in conducting experiments. This involves designing experiments, analyzing results, and concluding.
Moreover, I learned more about research design: how research projects are conceptualized—from initial thinking to conducting experiments to analyzing results. These skills are hard to develop on one's own. Under this program, senior students and research mentors in different research labs taught us the entire research process with utmost patience, making it a great learning environment for research beginners like me.
In addition to my learning during the internship, I have been able to connect with many other like-minded individuals during this time. We have kept in contact since then, making these two months a very fulfilling time for me.
My experience during the program provided me with the insight to what it means to be a researcher. It was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. The joy when your results come back positive, the panic when you mess up loading your qPCR plate, the depression that comes when you fail to do the experiment that should have been completed a week ago, and of course the pride and relief that comes after you complete your poster presentation. This is not an easy program which you can hope to cruise through, it is not simply another entry in your CV (although it undoubtedly will be one of the highlights), it is a program designed to train, to test and to nurture you into a better student, a researcher, and a scientist. I had a lot of fun during the two months, working with experienced and highly capable researchers who gave their utmost effort in training and helping me along my project, having fun with my cohort of like minded students coming from a variety of backgrounds; it was a fun way to spend my summer. Although there were times that I wish I was back at home enjoying my summer vacation, at the end I was proud to have spent the two months in the lab.
